The Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers are a duo that needs to be seen as well as heard. Nikki Grossman, who plays guitar and fiddle and performs vocals, says that the duo has been collecting vintage duds for years; dressing the part is essential for them. “To get in the mood, we really have to be gussied up to perform the way we do,” Grossman says.
Joe Hart, who plays guitar and mandolin, agreed. “I feel like people want a real show,” he said. “If we’re entertainers, I feel like we should be spectacular, and that’s part of the fun.”
At concerts, square dances, and contra dances, they are known for their light touch and sense of humor. They perform original songs and tunes inspired by the classic hillbilly, country-duo, and old-time musical traditions. And they bring back to life forgotten gems that deserve to be heard again.
Their 2018 album, Don't Think About Tomorrow Tonight, was showcased at Austin, Texas’s premier South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival. The Sapsuckers were also nominated this year by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry Association for Best Country Band in Wisconsin.
For the Country Record says of the Sapsuckers: “Gifted songwriters, their songs are heartfelt, catchy, humorous, and somehow old-timey and brand new all at the same time. An old-timey masterpiece. A must listen!”
